Good living = sustainability

I am looking for ways to make our lives simpler and more sustainable. I don't want my life to be trapped in a web of unhealthy, unnecessary items, events, and expectations. Instead, I want a simple, meaningful life, and I know that one factor that leads to such a life is sustainability.

In what ways can we make our lifestyle more sustainable--what can we do?

Quality items
Too often we've wasted money on cheap items that don't last long and often don't do the job we expect. In general, if you need an item, buy a quality item.

Less gimmicks and gadgets
The best tools are often the simplest tools. For example, I once had a very complex mixer with lots and lots of gadgets. The mixer took up a lot of room. I replaced that with a handheld mixer that works perfectly and doesn't take up much room. I also replaced the electric can opener with a simple handheld can opener. In general, unless you're becoming an expert in a particular area, simple machines are best.

Grow your own food
Finding ways to grow your own food is a terrific way to create a sustainable life. Growing your own food makes you more sensitive to food waste because you know how much time and energy goes into food production. The more you can learn about growing your own food, and then growing that food, the better.

In the days ahead, I'll research more ways to think about and live with sustainability. This is a positive way to protect our environment and enrich our lives. Onward.
